Aligning your AI use with your values

How should your organization use AI?

01 — Identify your values

What matters to your? What vision do you have for your organization and the world in the future? Understanding your organization’s goals will guide AI policy-making and allow you to explore your options without committing to a direction that’s counter to your values.

02 — Identify your goals

What does your non-profit exist to do? AI may be able to supercharge your organization’s progress; aligning your AI policies with your goals will ensure that your workers, volunteers, and technology are all rowing in the same direction.

03 — Identify your options

This is the fun part. What tools are out there that can help you automate the boring parts of your work? What tools can help you explore new horizons? What areas of AI development should you keep an eye on, so you are aware of new, aligned opportunities ASAP?

04 — Review your existing policies

What current technology, communication, and people policies currently structure your organization’s work? What do you want to keep, and what can you change to allow for the right kind of AI work?

05 — Talk to the people doing the work

Before we write policies, we need to understand the perspectives of the people the organization relies on to pursue its goals and enact its mission. How open are they to using AI? How are they using it now? What are they worried about when it comes to AI?

These interviews are anonymous and conducted by someone who does not work at your organization. They may include identifying particularly thoughtful people to help write policies.
